For those who don’t know (I certainly didn’t) November 6th is Stranger Things Day! In the show, this date is significant because it marks the day Will Byers first went missing in season one!
Sadly - or for many thankfully - this year there is no new season… this year that is. Today, Netflix announced a brand-new live-action spin-off from the Duffer Brothers and longtime Stranger Things writer Kate Trefry, coming in 2028.
This spin-off will be a prequel series titled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure. It is due to be set in the 1950s, decades before the original show, as well as the award-winning stage show Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which explores Henry Creel’s troubled past in Hawkins in 1959.
‘We’ve been dreaming of Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure for many years now, and to see it become a reality is surreal and exhilarating; it’s Stranger Things, but also thrillingly fresh, with a new setting, new heroes and villains, and new … actually, we’re not allowed to say any more. Now, on to casting. In the meantime - watch the skies, nerds!’ - Matt and Ross Duffer.
Production has been confirmed to take place in New Mexico, with casting underway right now.
The Duffer Brothers have also assembled one of the main brains behind The First Shadow Kate Trefry to co-produce the show, as well as BAFTA and Golden Globe - winning director Joe Wright (Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, Darkest Hour), who will direct the first three episodes.
‘The Duffer Brothers gave me my first paying job in Hollywood, and it has been a joy and a fever dream ever since.’ - Kate Trefry.
Additional executive producers include Shawn Levy and his 21 Laps, Paul Dichter, Shelley Meals, Andrea Sperling, and Pavlina Hatoupis.
This isn’t the first spin-off from the franchise. Recently Netflix has released two seasons of their animated show Stranger Things: Tales from ‘85. A show that has met mixed reception. Then there was Stranger Things: The Immersive Experience and Stranger Things: Face the Dark. Both are live-action interactive experiences. Each adding their own dimension to the franchise.
Despite the excitement of this announcement, we sadly do have to wait till 2028 to finally see what this new show holds. And what it’s really about. What is this new idea? And will we see the return of the Upside Down? Or is this a completely new story altogeth
